William was born in 1875 in Ireland.1   William's father was William Frederick Taplin and his mother was Margaret Guthrie.  His paternal grandparents were William Taplin and Harriette Hawkins; his maternal grandfather is William Barrie and his maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Wilson. He had a brother and three sisters, named George Vincent, Elizabeth, Henrietta and Alice Maud.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
