Thomas was born on March 18th, 1820 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  Thomas' father was Thomas Younger and his mother was Margaret Roberton. He had two sisters named Margaret  and Marion.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 68 in 1888 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, England.
