Alexander was born on October 26th, 1742 in Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland.  Alexander's father was James Wishart and his mother was Isobel Thomson.  His paternal grandparents were John Wishart and Agnes Edward. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Isabel and Janet.
