William's father was John Thomson and his mother was Georgina Robb Thomson. His paternal grandparents were John Thomson and Margaret Anderson; his maternal grandparents were George Thomson and Ann Streels Smith. He had two brothers and three sisters, named George, James, Margaret, Jessie and Braidwood. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 2 on September 30th, 1871 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
