Thomas was born on April 15th, 1744 in Breadsall, Derbyshire, England. Thomas' father was Henry Stanley and his mother was Catherine Bestwig.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Stanley and Grace Bentham. He had two brothers and a sister, named Henry, Gardiner Oliver and Hannah.
