Susan was born in 1840 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England.  Susan's father was John Read and her mother was Elizabeth Unknown. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Matthew, William, Caroline, Susanah and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the six children.
