William was born in February 1780 in Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, England.  William's father was Joseph Purnell and his mother was Dinah (Puxton) Puckstone.  His paternal grandparents were William Purnell  and Sarah Unknown; his maternal grandparents were William (Puxton) Puckstone and Hannah Unknown. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Joseph, Charles, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 62 in September 1842 in Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, England.  He was buried on September 25th, 1842 in Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, England.
