Sarah was born in December 1776 in Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, England. Sarah's father was Joseph Purnell and her mother was Dinah (Puxton) Puckstone. Her paternal grandparents were William Purnell and Sarah Unknown; her maternal grandparents were William (Puxton) Puckstone and Hannah Unknown. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Joseph, Charles, Hannah, Elizabeth and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the eight children.-
