Janet was born in 1712 in Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland.  Janet's father was James Pennycock and her mother was Marion Hodge.  Her maternal grandparents were John Hodge and Jean Dickson. She had two sisters named Marion and Isobel.  She was the oldest of the three children.
