Lydia was born in 1852 in Morton, Yorkshire, England.  Lydia's father was Benjamin Normington and her mother was Nancy Unknown. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Joshua, Thomas, Susey, Hephzibah and Anne.  She was the youngest of the six children.
