Joshua was born about 1842 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England.  Joshua's father was Benjamin Normington and his mother was Nancy Unknown. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Susey, Hephzibah, Anne and Lydia.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
