Edith was born in 1876 in Fareham, Hampshire, England. Edith's father was George James Needle and her mother was Eliza Mitchell. Her paternal grandparents were George Needle and Mary Frost; her maternal grandparents were Richard Mitchell and Matilda Unknown. She had a brother and eight sisters, named Frank, Emily, Jinny, Alice, Kit, Lillian, Agnes, Elsie and Virginia. She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
