Vivian Evelyn's father was Henry Mitchelson and her mother was Amelia Lydia Hill. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mitchelson and Ann Taplin; her maternal grandparents were Edward Hill and Mary Martin. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Edward Alfred, Charles Archibald, Sydney Percival, Douglas, Ada, Edith Margaret and Dora Blanche. She was the second youngest of the nine children.
