Henry's father was Henry Mitchelson and his mother was Amelia Lydia Hill. His paternal grandparents were Henry Mitchelson and Ann Taplin; his maternal grandparents were Edward Hill and Mary Martin. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Edward Alfred, Charles Archibald, Sydney Percival, Douglas, Ada, Edith Margaret, Dora Blanche and Vivian Evelyn. He was the oldest of the nine children.
