John Hay Maitland was born on September 28th, 1894 in Bath, Somerset, England.  John Hay Maitland's father was Dr George Hardyman and his mother was Eglantine Henrietta Keith Lauderdale (Maitland ?).  His paternal grandparents were John Hay Hardyman and Annabella Gibson (Annie) Paton (Forshall). He had five brothers and a sister, named Malcolm Lauderdale, Harry, Edward Hay, George Hugh Murray, Victor and Myrtle Rothes.  He was the oldest of the seven children. He had a half-sister named Constance Christian Beatrice Beath.  He died as a war casualty at the age of 23 on August 24th, 1918 in Biefvillers-les-Bapaume, France.  He was buried in Bienvillers.
