William was born on July 6th, 1828 in Penicuik, Midlothian, Scotland and his baptism took place in Peebles, Peeblesshire, Scotland. William's father was Alexander Greig and his mother was Margaret Symington. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Charles, Janet, Isabella, Janet and Marjory.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
