James was born in 1815 in Ayton, Berwickshire, Scotland.  James' father was Alexander Greig and his mother was Margaret Symington. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Charles, William, Janet, Isabella, Janet and Marjory.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
