Margaret was born in 1865 in Carlisle, Cumbria, England.  Margaret's father was Charles Greig and her mother was Jane Hunter.  Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Greig and Margaret Symington. She had three brothers and a sister, named Alexander, Charles, John and Elisabeth.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
