Alexander was born in 1863 in Carlisle, Cumbria, England.  Alexander's father was Charles Greig and his mother was Jane Hunter.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Greig and Margaret Symington. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Charles, John, Elisabeth and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
