Gwen was born in March 1923 in Islington, London. Gwen's father was Alfred Joseph Dossetter and her mother was Clara Cookson. Her paternal grandparents were Alfred Dossetter and Jane Elizabeth Gothard (or Alice Mary HAWKINS); her maternal grandparents were Charles Frederick Cookson and Constance Emily Gillett. She has a brother named Bernard. She is the older of the two children.-
