Helen was born on May 28th, 1865 in Cathcart, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Helen's father was Joseph Delgaty and her mother was Catharine McLean. Her paternal grandparents were James Delgaty and Margaret White; her maternal grandparents were Unknown McLean and Annabella Unknown. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Jane and Catherine. She was the youngest of the four children. She had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named James, Henry, John, Joseph, Hannah, Margaret and Agnes.
