Alexander's father was James Delgaty and his mother was Margaret White.  His maternal grandparents were Alexander White and Margaret Johnston. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John, William , James, Robert, Joseph, James, Margaret, Anne and Anne.  Alexander and William  were twins.  He died at the age of 63 in 1857.
