Robert was born about 1855 in North Perrott, Somerset, England. Robert's father was Jeremiah Brown and his mother was Louisa Unknown.  His paternal grandparents were George Brown and Betsey Unknown. He had four brothers and a sister, named George, Samuel, Henry, Emanuel and Ann.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
