Janet was born on September 27th, 1787 in Dalgety, Fife, Scotland and her baptism took place there on September 30th, 1787.  Janet's father was George Beveridge and her mother was Janet Muir.  Her paternal grandparents were John Beveridge and Grissel (Grisle) Simson (Symsone). She had three brothers and four sisters, named John, George, James, Elizabeth, Grissel, Agnes and Helen.  She was the second youngest of the eight children.
