Isabel was born on November 13th, 1807 in Leslie, Fifeshire, Scotland. Isabel's father was John Beath and her mother was Elizabeth Lundie. Her paternal grandparents were David Beath and Catherine Christie; her maternal grandparents were Walter Lundie and Elizabeth Paterson. She had three brothers and a sister, named John, Andrew, David and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the five children.-
