His paternal grandparents were Alexander Barclay and Margaret Alexander; his maternal grandparents were Andrew Beath and Anne Stirling. He had eight brothers and a sister, named Alexander, Andrew, John Beath, William, David Beath, Isaac Shoolbread, David, Robert Baxter and Anne Stirling. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children. He died in Leslie, Fifeshire, Scotland ?.-
