Edward was born in 1878 in Greenwich, Kent, England.1  Edward's father was George Ambrose and his mother was Angelina Rumsay.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Ambrose and Ann Unknown; his maternal grandparents were Robert Rumsay and Patience Unknown. He had three brothers and five sisters, named George, Frederick, Herbert, Florence, Alice, Deborah, Lydia and Minnie.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
