His paternal grandparents were James Alexander and Janet Nivison; his maternal grandparents were David Borthwick and Margaret Baxter. He had a brother and four sisters, named David Thomas, Janet, Marion Borthwick, Mary Johnstone and Margaret. He had a half-brother named Thomas Hood Wilson. He died on October 23rd, 1881.-
