Riar Alfred was born about 1824 in , Bedford, Virginia, USA.1   Riar Alfred's father was William Pleasant Howell and his mother was Frances Anglin Coleman Wood.  His paternal grandparents were David Howell and Rebecca Dixon; his maternal grandparents were Francis Wood and Judith Anglin. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Jessee Larkin, William Washington, Pleasant Austin, N Larkin, Alexanderia Fuel, Moses Willoughby, Elizabeth Betsey, Rebecca, Lucy, Alexandria Fuel, Frances Alesia and Judith Anglin.  He was the eighth oldest of the thirteen children.  He died in 1870 in Franklin, Virginia, United States.

Riar Alfred and Anna Lee were married in a religious ceremony on August 21st, 1847 in Franklin, Virginia, United States.2   They had six sons and four daughters, named James Riley, Charles Henry, Lewis J, William M, John A, David, Sarah M, Louisa J, Mary EF and Ann Malinda.
