      Bob was at age 22 the senior surviving officer of the torpedoed and sunken USS Frederick C. Davis. -- the crew of the USS Hayter rescued him and his shipmates from the water. He is mentioned in Vol. X of Samuel Eliot Morison's 1964 landmark naval history, The Atlantic Battle Won, and was a guest speaker at the 1998 Minerd-Miner-Minor Reunion.

      During World War II, ...., Bob volunteered for ser-vice that led to sea duty on the Destroyer Escort Frederick C. Davis. On April 24, 1945, while tracking a U-Boat contact, the Davis was hit amid ship by a torpedo and sank quickly with great loss of life. The Senior Surviving Officer was Bob Minerd who was awarded a Purple Heart and the Navy Marine Corps Medal for valor as he tried to aid his stricken shipmates during the ac-tion.
