    - Adam Ridenour was a cooper by trade. His stepfather Jacob Gallentine was also a cooper. Saltlick township, Fayette County, Pa was originally heavily covered with trees. That may have been one reason Jacob Gallentine and Adam Ridenour first tried to settle in Saltlick township in 1799, but then left shortly and moved back to Washington County, Maryland.
      
      A barrel was made of strips of wood called staves which were cut with a side axe and then shaved to shape by a draw knife. Next a jointer plane was used to get he proper angle for a water tight joint. While some gauges were used to measure angles most of the work was done by eye, hence a great deal of skill was required. After the stave joints were done the staves were put in a jig or form to make the barrel shape with metal hoops slid over the staves prior to steaming the wood. The steaming allowed the wood to bend to the required shape.
