Thomas was born in 1785 in Armley, Leeds, Yorkshire and his baptism took place there on June 12th, 1785. Thomas' father was Thomas Holmes and his mother was Ann Boys. His paternal grandparents were John Holms and Mary Mann. He had four sisters named Mary, Ann, Sarah and Ann. He was the second youngest of the five children.
