James was born in 1821 in Old Trindon, Co Durham.¹ James' father was James Henderson and his mother was Jane Sanderson. His paternal grandparents were John Henderson and Jane Perkins; his maternal grandparents were James Sanderson and Jane Coates. He had four brothers named John, William, Matthew and Sanderson. He was the oldest of the five children.
