James was born on December 17th, 1848 in Providence Place, Bramley, Leeds, Yorkshire.¹ James' father was William Butler and his mother was Mary Arendall. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Butler and Nancy. He had four brothers named Thomas, Samuel, George and Joseph. He was the third oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother named William.
