Mary was born in 1830 in Armley, Leeds, Yorkshire.1 Mary's father was Robert Boynton and her mother was Ann Holmes. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Holmes and Ann Boys. She had seven brothers and four sisters, named Henry, John, Thomas, Robert, George, Joseph, William, Sarah, Ann, Anne and Elizabeth. She was the second youngest of the twelve children.-
