William was born in 1853 in Wortley, Leeds, Yorkshire.1 William's father was Robert Richardson Roberts and his mother was Sarah. His paternal grandparents were James Roberts and Harriet Richardson. He had four brothers named Richardson, Charles, George and Alfred. He was the second oldest of the five children.
