Philip was born in 1847 in Middleton, Teesdale, Co Durham.1 Philip's father was Thomas Raine and his mother was Jane Wearmouth. His paternal grandparents were John Raine and Mary Bainbridge; his maternal grandparents were John Wearmouth and Elizabeth Watson. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, Thomas, Charles and Mary. He was the second youngest of the five children. He had five half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Matthew, James, William, Thomas, Joseph, Agnes, Margaret and Ellen.-
