When Nancy was about 2 years old she was standing with one foot on a cart/pram and the other on a wall. The pram moved and Nancy did the splits and injured her hips. She was told to keep quiet so as not to disturb her strict father. The injury seems to have been played down. TB set into the injured hip resulting in lots of treatments and operations. She was cured while still quite young. Soon after the family were on trip to Cape Town and were staying at the Gardens. Doctors orders were strictly "no strenuous exercise" so that she could recuperate properly. Her brother Merrie wanted to show her something, and unbeknown to her parents the two went for a walk. She couldn't walk so far and collapsed. Merrie had to carry her back. Unfortunately this led to the restart of her TB problems. The TB left her with a stiff shortened leg. She had many operations, both in South Africa and the UK, including one to insert a steel pin into the hip to lengthen the shorter leg and make walking easier. This operation was only done after the birth of her two daughters, probably around mid 1950's. Nancy lived with her parents in Mafeking on the Imperial Reserve intil 1936 when her father retired. She styed on In Mafeking, staying in an hotel, for another two years. In 1938 she joined her parents at Untali. At that time they were living at "Drumfed", just outside Umtali. Sometime between 1939 and 1940 her father "discovered" Ellerslie. This was a piece of land that was in Mozambique, but was leased by Rhodesia. In 1940 she met William Glass, a civil engineer working on the water system for Umtali. The got enganged in June and a short two weeks later were married at Ellerslie.
