William Lister Glass

  • William was born in Lahore, India.  As his dad worked for the British railway they moved around a lot. William therefore attended many different schools. As the plains were very hot during the summer months he later attended school in the foothills of the Himalyas. Here he attended Phillander Smith College in Naini Tal.  This was probably his last school in India. William left India at the age of 11/12 to attend school in Eastborne, England. He never returned to India. He first attended Winchester House, Eastborne. He then was at Eastborne College from May 1928 till July 1932.  At Eastborne he excelled academically and on the sports field. He was part of the "Shooting Eight", the school's shooting team, for three years. Interestingly the school's shooting range was on the wide flat pebbly beach. The boys would then shoot out to sea. He then attended City and Guilds Engineering College at the University of London. When he had finished his degree his aunt in SA, Irene Peacock, invited him to SA for a visit and paid the passage. He arrived 28/9/1935. He stayed in SA as he got a job with the Engineering firm "Steward, Sviridor and Oliver". After working for them for 26 years he became a partner. He was still working for them when he "retired" in  1979. He however continued working for them and "retired" again in 1984. In 1989 he was told that this "retirement" was the final one.
    In 1939 the firm sent him to Umtali, Rhodesia to help with the planning of the water scheme for Umtali. He arrived 3/12/1939. He was assistant to Sam McCulloch. Sam was friends with a Merrie Price whose family lived on a farm just outside of Umtali. Merrie had a sister, Nancy. William fell in love and 6 months later they were married. William had to travel a lot for work and Nancy went with him. They stayed in a caravan called "Buttercaup". Lynne was born while they lived in Umtali. In ? they moved back to Johannesburg, SA. Their second daughter, Merion, was born in SA. On 28/2/1951 they once more move to Salisbury, Rhodesia. They bought a house in Avondale and named it "Trellerslie"after "Ellerslie", the Price's home in Umtali. On 20/7/1963 they returned to SA for the last time. On the 20/5/1964 they moved into 11 Alyth Rd, Forest Town, Johannesburg. This was Nancy's last home. In ? William sold the house and moved to Potchefstroom to be with his daughter, Merion Liebenberg.
