- William was part of the British army during the siege of Ladysmith, Natal, SA Nov/ Dec 1899. Over Christmas there was a cease-fire, when suddenly a mortar landed in the British camp, but did not explode. William Bowder was one of the two men that went to investicate, only to discover a piece of Christmas cake and a flag in the mortar. The family was in pocession of the empty mortar until the late Irene Peacock donated it to a museum.
In 1913 transferred to Rawal Pindi, India and promoted to Captain.
Fought in WW1 in the Indian 12th Dept first as a captain and then a major. He received a campaign medal.
