Arthur was born in 1890 in Broughton Astley, Leicestershire.¹   Arthur's father was Arthur WARDLE and his mother was Annie HARDING. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, George, Mabel and Winifred.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
