Joseph's father was William Hurd GODDARD and his mother was Clara THOMPSON.  His paternal grandparents were William Hurd GODDARD and Mary VEASEY. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Albert, Alfred, Florence, Bertha, Gertrude and Mabel.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
