John was born in 1849 in Old Stratford, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire.¹ John's father was Samuel DUFFIN and his mother was Martha CALLAWAY. His paternal grandparents were John DUFFIN and Mary ROBBINS . He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, George, Samuel, William, Eliza, Jane and Mary. He was the third oldest of the eight children.
