Robert was born on March 8th, 1920 in Batesville, Alabama.1   Robert's father was Cleophus (R-Cliff) Smith and his mother was Beatrice Corpatts`.  His paternal grandparents were ? Smith and Annie B Booker; his maternal grandparents were Corpatts and Caldonia Knoxs. He had two brothers named Tom and Willy.  He was the youngest of the three children.
