Simon Mire

  • Joseph's twin brother Simon married Madeleine, daughter of Cabanocé pioneer Jean-Baptiste Cormier, at Cabanocé in March 1766.  But he did not remain on the river like his brothers. 
    
    In the early 1780s, Simon Mire  and his family crossed the Atchafalaya Basin and settled at Côte Gelée, in the Atakapas District, creating a western branch of the family. ...
    
    The family's name also is spelled Lemire.

  • Simon mire died on his farm at Cote Gelee on 12/26/1807, his wife Madgeleine Comier died about 1821 the succession #429 of Madeleine Cormier dated 12/20/1821 in St.Martinville court house born Abt. 1744 in Pisiguit, Acadia; died December 26, 1807.

    Wall of Names, 23, calls him Simon MIRE, & lists him with Madeleine CORMIER as though they were already married when they reached LA.  Their marriage record in Bourgeois, Cabanocey, 171, & Voorhies, J., Some Late Eighteenth Century Louisianians, 424, says otherwise.  It is unlikely that the marriage at Cabanoce in Mar 1766 was merely the blessing of a marriage that already existed:  first, the ceremony was conducted at Cabanoce not by a priest but by the community's commandant; and second, Madeleine probably reached LA in Feb 1764 with her parents via GA, SC, NY, & Mobile, over a year before Simon arrived via Halifax &  St.-Domingue, now Haiti.  The likely scenario is that Simon met Madeleine soon after he reached Cabanoce.  They were married by the commandant on the same day that Madeleine's sister Marie married Michel POIRIER, another young Acadian who had recently arrived in the settlement.
