Jean was born about 1709 in Port Royal, Acadia, Nova Scotia, Canada.  Jean's father was Jacques Leger (dit Larose) and his mother was Madeleine Trahan. He had two brothers and a sister, named Jacques, Francois and Francoise.  He was the third oldest of the four children.
