        WE are a family originally from Deweyville Tx. My Grandfather, William Newton Joshlin changed everyone in the family's name one time when he went to get a birth certificate at the courthouse in Newton, Tx. The clerk there asked him how he spelled his last name and he, unable to read or write, added the "h" to the original spelling.

        Thanks for writing! I can tell you this: there were three brothers that came to America together. They were Scottish but left from England. They entered through Boston. One was a Duke, he stayed in Massachusetts (his son is the one who researched diabetes and has the center named after him), one settled near ?East Allison? Illinois and one settled in Colorado.
    The one who settled in Illinois married an Indian Princess whose Father was the Chief of the Sioux nation. This would be my Gr Gr Grandfather. They had at least two sons. My Great Grandfather's name was Joseph Michael Joslin he had at least one brother and his name was John Henry Joslin. Joseph Michael Joslin was born in 1849 and died in 1940 being 91. His first wife was from Joplin, Missouri and her last name was Joplin she passed away before he came to Texas and I don't know if they had any children together.
    Some time after Joseph's first wife passed away he came to Deweyville, Texas (southeast Texas) as the law was after him in Illinois for murder; of which he always maintained innocence. There he married a woman named Bell Brown who was my Great Grandmother. She passed away just a few days after my Grandfather was born in 1901. His name was William Newton Joslin (later Joshlin). He was born in hospital in Newton, Texas. His Mother had passed away and he was not expected to live, so as the story goes, the doctors named him William Newton Joslin. He lived from 1901-1984.
    
    During WW2 he went to the Court House in Newton to get a birth certificate so he could work at the shipyard in Orange, Texas and they asked him how to spell his name and he said JosHlin.
    
    My Father's name is Darrel. He was born March 14, 1927. He had a lot of brothers and sisters.
    
    My name of course is Jay Joshlin, I live near DeRidder, Louisiana, about 50 miles from Deweyville, Texas. Please write and let me know if there are any inaccuracies in this story and who I am kin to.
    
    ** I fear that some of your Joslin information may be incorrect. According to the birth, death and marriage records of early Conn., as well as the Wessler book. The ancestry of Dr. Elliot Joslin of the Diabetes clinic traces back thru Killingly, Conn to Israel Joslin of Devon England, Son of a Joseph. Israel arrived in America via Newfoundland, first settling in Gloucester, MA and then moving to CT. He was appointed a game sheriff in Killingly and was also active as a church elder. At no time were any titles conferred on this branch of the Joslin family. So his claims of being a "duke", I'm afraid are somewhat unfounded

  • Funeral Services for William Newton Joshlin, 83 of the Oaks Living Center in Orange and longtime area resident will be today at the Hartsburg Baptist Church here.
    
    The Rev. James Bradford, pastor of Hartsburg Baptist Church will officiate with the burial following in the King Cemetery here. Deacons of the Hartsburg Baptist Church will server as pallbearers.
    
    He died Friday at 9 pm at the Oaks Living Center here after a lengthy illness.
    
    A native and longtime resident of the Hartsburg area, he lived in Orange one year.  He was a retired sander at the Weaver Shipyard and Drydock Inc. in Orange.
    
    Survivors are his two daughters, Berdie Ferguson Burch of Orange and Mary Tina Joshlin of Jackson, LA. , five sons Darrell Joshlin of Newton, TX., John H. Joshlin of Cuero, TX. , David Edward Joshlin of Monticello, ARK., Charles Albert Joshlin of Killeen, TX. , and Jack J. Joshlin of Jackson, LA. a brother Leo Joshlin of Diboll, TX., 31 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
