  • 4. MARK2 COLE (STEPHEN SR1) was born Abt. 1697 in England, and died Abt. October 1769 in Craven County, South Carolina. He married ALICE EVANS. She died Abt. June 26, 1787 in probably Liberty County, Georgia.
    
    Notes for MARK COLE:
    In 1747, Mark moves down on the Black Water River, south fork of the Roanoke in Virginia. On April 16, 1747, Mark applies for 200 acres on both sides of Little Creek, a branch of Black Water River.
    
    On April 22, 1748, Mark applies for 200 acres, adjoining Stephen Cole, on the upper line on Story Creek, a branch of Pigg River. On April 27, 1748, Mark applies for 400 acres on the north fork of Chestnut Creek. Mark receives four more tracts on Back Run, Pittman Creek, Buttram Creek and Chestnut Creek, a branch of the Pigg River.
    
    Mark and two of his sons, John and Mark Jr, were active in the Episcopal Church and in the affairs of the county. On October 28, 1754, Mark took the oath of a Justice of the County Court in Chancery. In November 1754, he was appointed to view road. In May 1755, he was appointed to take tithes (taxes).
    
    On October 21, 1758, Mark was granted 300 acres on the north side of Ashpole Swamp, south side of Downing Creek in Bladen County, North Carolina. Mark and Alice sold this land to John Bounds in 1765.
    
    Mark, along with his nephew James Cole, lived in Bladen County, North Carolina for about seven years and then they moved to Craven County, South Carolina.
    
    Mark's estate administration after his death was conducted in October 1769 in Craven County, South Carolina. Mark died in 1769, "Citation granted Alice Cole, to administer on the estate and effects of Mark Cole, her late husband, of St. Marks Parish, farmer. To be read in the Parish Church of St. Marks and returned certified." Dated October 12, 1769.
    
    After Mark died, his family lived in St. Marks Parish, South Carolina for about five years, then they moved to Georgia. Alice Cole, widow, buys a lot in Sunbury, Liuberty County, Georgia, dated 1777. Alice's will was probated on June 26, 1787 in Liberty County, Georgia.

    In September 1754, Mark Jr was appointed Captain of Bedford County Militia.
