Karl was born on April 2nd, 1838 in Tartumaa, Nõo kk, Vastse-Nõo. Karl's father was Andres Tomson and his mother was Lena.  His maternal grandparents were Ado and Madli. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Peter, Hans, Jaan, Michel, Ewa, Liso, Marri and Ann.  He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.  He died  due to maohaigus at 10 months old on February 22nd, 1839 in Tartumaa, Nõo kk, Vastse-Nõo.
