René Maurits was born on March 5th, 1894.  René Maurits' father was Petrus Josephus Vervaeke and his mother was Marie Octavie Verroonen.  His paternal grandparents were Eduardus Vervaeke and Francisca Bulcaen; his maternal grandfather was Carolus Ludovicus Verroonen and his maternal grandmother is Julie Meerschman. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Modest Remi, Jules Camille, Angelus Alois, Ernest Julien Remi, Cyriel Emiel Achiel, Marie-Louise and Irma Celina.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 78 on January 20th, 1973.
